Golf wedges are the specialty instruments of your golf game. They are used for the challenging, short shots to the green, as well as from the sand. Manufacturers recently have begun changing the lofts on their regular irons, making it imperative that the golfer have the proper wedges in his or her bag to play the all-important short game.
There are basically 4 types of golf wedges. Golfers should carry at least 3 of them, preferably all 4.
Pitching wedges are used for "longer" shots from 125 yards or closer. The loft of pitching wedges are between 46 to 51 degrees. Most manufacturers include a pitching wedge in a set of irons.
As the name applies, sand wedges are used for sand/bunker shots, but comparable to lob wedges. The loft of sand wedges generally between 55 to 57 degrees.
Gap wedges are a compromise between a pitching wedge and sand wedge. The loft of gap wedges are between 51 to 53 degrees.
Lob wedges are used for finesse shots over an obstacle and onto the green. The loft of lob wedges are between 60 to 64 degrees. Remember, the higher the loft, the higher the ball flight, but produces less distance.
Most shafts for all types of golf wedges are steel, primarily because of its durability. Steel shafts are preferred for golf wedges because their heavier weight helps control the shot.

Adam Scott is regarded as the most exciting young Australian golfer since Greg Norman. At the age of 23 years, eight months and 12 days, he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, an event considered by many to be the game's fifth Major.
Scott is a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour. His initial breakthrough came at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship after a second round 62 set up a four stroke win and saw Adam break into the top 20 in the World Rankings for the first time.
