Appleby extends Mercedes lead

Appleby extends Mercedes lead 8th January 2006

Two-time defending champion Stuart Appleby extended his lead at the $5.4 million Mercedes Championships after firing a three-under-par round of 70 for a six-under total of 213.

The Australian now leads by two strokes from US Open winner Michael Campbell in his quest to become the first player in 49 years to win the event three straight times.

Jim Furyk is a further shot back in third place at three under, one clear of Lucas Glover while World number 2 Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia are the only other players in red figures at one under the card.

Another windy day tested the 28-man field of last year's PGA Tour winners, Appleby moved one step closer to becoming the first golfer since Gene Littler, in 1957, to capture this championship three straight years.

Adam Scott

Adam Scott is regarded as the most exciting young Australian golfer since Greg Norman. At the age of 23 years, eight months and 12 days, he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, an event considered by many to be the game's fifth Major.

Scott is a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour. His initial breakthrough came at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship after a second round 62 set up a four stroke win and saw Adam break into the top 20 in the World Rankings for the first time.
