Campbell wins World Match Play Championship 18th September 2005

Michael Campbell who stunned the golfing world when he became the first New Zealander to win a major since Bob Charles won the British Open in 1963 by winning the U.S. Open won the World Match Play Championship

The 36-year-old Campbell defeated Paul McGinley 2 and 1 in the final.

Campbell made the most of the Irishman's errors over the closing holes at Wentworth, sealing the civtory on the second last green as McGinley began to spray his drives. McGinley put his drives into the trees on both the 15th and 16th to virtually hand Campbell the title.

Campbell picked up 1million, the largest prize in golf. Campbell beat South African Retief Goosen in the semifinals on Saturday.
