Monty maintains his lead

Monty maintains his lead 8th October 2005

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie maintained his opening round lead at the WGC American Express Championship as he looks to break through for his maiden PGA TOUR victory. The 42 year old Scotsman followed up his opening 64 with a second round 69 for a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the event.

Britain's David Howell charged from the chasing pack as he picked up three shots in his first eight holes to move into a share of second place with big hitting American John Daly. World Number 1 Tiger Woods is a further shot back.

Montgomerie said afterwards, "I'm actually quite tired, the jet-lag is kicking in so I'm glad to get finished. After a 64 any score in the 60s is a reasonable effort.

"My confidence is high and that's what is keeping me going. I'm looking forward to playing at the weekend and seeing how well I can do."

Adam Scott

Adam Scott is regarded as the most exciting young Australian golfer since Greg Norman. At the age of 23 years, eight months and 12 days, he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, an event considered by many to be the game's fifth Major.

Scott is a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour. His initial breakthrough came at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship after a second round 62 set up a four stroke win and saw Adam break into the top 20 in the World Rankings for the first time.
