The Presidents Cup got underway yesterday with the International team taking an early 3 1/2 -2 1/2 lead with 28 matches to go. In the biggest match on the opening day, Tiger Woods and Fred Couples were on the receiving end of a first up defeat to Adam Scott and Retief Goosen who proved too strong after taking control on the front nine.
Vijay Singh and Mark Hensby then halved their match against Fred Funk and Jim Furyk before Team USA went ahead through the pairing of Phil Mickelson , Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank who won their matches.
US Open champion Michael Campbell and Angel Cabrera to put the International team back on an even keel with victory over Davis Love III and Kenny Perry before Trevor Immelman and Mike Weir demolished David Toms and Stewart Cink 6 and 5 to give the ascendancy to the Internationals after the opening day.

Adam Scott is regarded as the most exciting young Australian golfer since Greg Norman. At the age of 23 years, eight months and 12 days, he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, an event considered by many to be the game's fifth Major.
Scott is a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour. His initial breakthrough came at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship after a second round 62 set up a four stroke win and saw Adam break into the top 20 in the World Rankings for the first time.
