Wie struggles

Wie struggles 13th January 2006

16 year old school girl Michelle Wie had a nightmare start to her first tournament on the PGA Tour as a Pro when she carded a 9 over par 79 that left her tied for last place.

Playing at the Sony Open in Hawaii thanks to a sponsors exemption courtesy of Sony, Wie was attempting to become the first woman in 61 years to make the cut on the PGA Tour.

South African golfer Rory Sabbatini is the clubhouse leader after he birdied five of his last seven holes to finish at 5 under 65. Sabbatini holds a one shot lead over American David Toms and Korean K.J. Choi.

A host of players including Jim Furyk, Jeff Sluman, Chad Campbell, Bubba Watson, James Driscoll, Charles Warren, Jeff Gove and Peter Lonard are a further shot back after opening with 67.

Adam Scott

Adam Scott is regarded as the most exciting young Australian golfer since Greg Norman. At the age of 23 years, eight months and 12 days, he became the youngest winner of The Players Championship on the US PGA Tour, an event considered by many to be the game's fifth Major.

Scott is a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour. His initial breakthrough came at the 2003 Deutsche Bank Championship after a second round 62 set up a four stroke win and saw Adam break into the top 20 in the World Rankings for the first time.
